For those seeking “remote” outdoor experiences that aren’t far from the beaten path, the State’s Donnell Pond Reserve offers a wealth of backcountry recreational opportunities just east of Ellsworth. This 15,479-acre property holds a constellation of ponds and mountains that are perfectly suited to family outings – whether hikes, picnics, canoe trips or camping excursions. The Reserve is situated between two State-designated scenic byways, Route One and Route 182, providing lovely vistas even to those who pass by without stopping.

I wanted  to get away from the crowded trails of Acadia during the summer of 05. Prior to arriving on MDI I decided to look off Island and chose Donnell Pond.

Prior to the trip I spoke with a park representative who was very helpful and gave me  a great deal of information regarding the road and trail conditions within the park. He also told me where to download a PDF Map warning me it was a bit out of date. There were more trails.

My son, nephew, and I did a day trip.  It reminded me of the Acadia 20 -30 years ago in the off season.  During our hike to the top of Black Mountain we encountered no other hikers and a great deal of wildlife.  The trails are easy to follow with appropriate cairns and markers along the way.

The hike to the top of Black Mountain is about 1.25 miles walking distance. At the beginning of the trail your vertical rise is about 400 feet over a distance of 1/4 mile with most of the rise occurring over a distance of just about 750 feet. My nephew  age 22  in very good shape who made jokes about my pace  complained the next day how the hike had in fact  worn him down.

After taking in the spectacular views, having lunch , logging the geocache  and looking at the road and trail options we split up. I went back to get the car while the other two decided to go ridge hopping over to the pond a  distance of about 2.3 miles according to their track log.  The pond was a cool refreshing break.

For you geocache enthusiasts  there has been a geocache on the top of Black Mountain. I would suggest you check the status by clicking the geocache link.
